🇬🇧 English : El Irati S.A. was founded in 1907 by entrepreneur Domingo Elizondo. For its time, it was a remarkably modern industrial company. Timber from the Irati Forest was transported to Ekai and processed in the enormous sawmill.
However, the wood waste was not discarded. Sawdust, bark, branches and other residues were burned in ovens and used to produce charcoal. Through chemical distillation, products including methanol (wood alcohol), acetone, acetic acid and tar were also produced. The chemical plant began operating around 1910.
After the Second World War, competition from imported timber increased. From the 1960s onwards, the company experienced financial difficulties. The Ekai sawmill and distillery remained in operation until 1990. After their closure, the industrial complex was abandoned and gradually fell into decay.
